Health outcomes in Sunderland are generally poor when compared with the national picture. The poor health outcomes become apparent soon after birth and continue throughout the life course as negative life chances continuing to impact, often culminating in premature illness and death. One way we can improve this is by reducing the number of people who smoke or start to smoke in the City.


The latest Integrated Household Survey data shows that Sunderland has reduced prevalence in all adults from 29.7% to 22.1%. This is a fall of 7.6% over a period of 2 years. Smoking Prevalence for routine and manual works is 30.6% compare to 29.1% in the Northeast in April 11 - March 12. Only one year of data has been collected.


The Sunderland Health and Wellbeing Strategy defines a new approach to improving health outcomes across the City, taking an asset-based approach and building the resilience of individuals, families and communities. This approach is reflected in the current work that the Alliance oversees and also through the Sunderland Tobacco Alliance Action Plan in 2013 – 14.


Sunderland’s Tobacco Alliance is a multi-agency group, leading on the strategic overview of reducing smoking locally. The alliance brings together key partners and agencies including Public Health, City Services, Children’s Services, Health Housing and Adult Services, South of Tyne and Wear Stop Smoking Service, Gentoo, Fire Brigade, Sunderland University and Sunderland City Hospitals, who support the delivery of the Tobacco Action Plan for Sunderland.


The challenges ahead are to:

  • reduce the prevalence of smoking thus changing attitudes and beliefs about smoking 
  • reducing secondhand smoking 
  • reduce the supply of illicit tobacco products 
  • help young people not to start smoking

In order to meet these goals a holistic approach is needed in tobacco control which is supported and driven forward by all partners. Tobacco control is a complex issue and no single approach will be successful in isolation; therefore it requires commitment and contributions from a range of organisations.
